Projects target traffic flow
WESTBANK - The first of three road projects to improve traffic flow onto the new William R. Bennett Bridge will go to tender within weeks say Westbank political leaders.
Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie and regional director Aaron Dinwoodie met recently to discuss the second of three underpass/overpass solutions aimed at eliminating congestion caused by traffic lights on Highway 97 on the Westside near the existing Okanagan Lake bridge.
There are several plans in the works for the Central Okanagan's Highway 97 corridor, including overpasses at Campbell Road, Westside Road and Boucherie Road.
The Ministry of Transportation and local government planners are currently drafting schematics for the Westside Road interchange, but the first of the three projects, Campbell Road, will soon start construction.
"The Campbell Road interchange project is about to take flight here in a matter of weeks," said Dinwoodie.
"As you can see, we're getting well advanced on the bridge. It's to be completed by July of 2008, and that includes the bridge and the Campbell Road interchange, so most of the heavy construction on Campbell Road will likely take place in 2007."
Dinwoodie stressed that all levels of government in the region understand the bridge is vital to the future economic development of the Central Okanagan and Westbank will play a key roll in that future growth. It already draws from one of province's largest tax bases, despite having never been incorporated.
"Without the heart, blood doesn't pump around the body very well and that bridge is the heart for Kelowna. It's the heart for Lake Country, it's the heart for Peachland, and it's the heart for the Westside," said Dinwoodie.
Louie said the project is key for the WFN as well. "Thousands of people are going to be moving here."
