TERASEN GAS UTILITY
IS NOT SUPPOSE TO CHARGE RURAL RESIDENTS
A FRANCHISE FEE,
BUT HAS BEEN FOR YEARS

| RURAL GAS CUSTOMERS I am a rural gas customer that noticed a franchise fee on my bill. I called the British Columbia Utilities Commission to find out what this fee was. I was told this fee was charged by Terasen to be paid directly to an organized community for the use of properties within those boundaries by Terasen Gas and was not to be charged on rural property. BCUC contacted Terasen for me and this was promptly rectified and I was given a credit for these charges back to 2003. I have since contacted several neighbours and friends that live in rural areas and have found several of them are also paying this fee. I suggest that you check your gas bill. To find out if you are in a rural area, look at your property tax notice. This property tax notice says Rural Property Tax Notice.
In rural areas, property taxes are collected by the province through the finance ministry. Within municipal boundaries, taxes are paid to the municipality.

Did you know that you get charged just for being hooked up to Terasen's Gas, even if you don't use the gas for that period of time.
