OKANAGAN WESTSIDE ROAD BC

The White Elephant showing is located 25 kilometres west- southwest of Vernon BC, north of Shorts Creek.
The White Elephant (082LSW042) mesothermal vein deposit produced 63,170 grams of gold and 9,549 grams of silver from 5,146 tonnes mined in the period from 1922 to 1935.
In 1921, a 2-metre shaft had been completed and in 1922 about 264 tonnes of mineralized rock were shipped producing 5,257 grams of silver and 13,468 grams of gold.
In 1924, Okanagan Premier Mines Ltd. extended the shaft to 30 metres and drove a 60-metre crosscut.
In 1928, Pre-Cambrian Mines Ltd. continued underground exploration and in 1929, mining from the pyrrhotite lens produced 27 tonnes of pyrrhotite concentrate, containing low gold values.
Production from the quartz vein during the period 1933-35, totalled 4882 tonnes and produced 4,292 grams of silver and 49,702 grams of gold.

This is the cabin where they melted the gold and strip searched the miners
before they went home for the day. There is a bench in the shack where the
miners sat.

standing, but the firemen had to knock it down during the fire.

There is a huge pile of gold mine tailings at White Elephant gold mine. The
tailings are a yellowish brown colour.
This is a large square stone they used to melt the gold. There was an
indent in the top of the square stone where they put the gold and then they
heated up the stone enough for the gold to melt. You can see the square
indent in the stone (photo below) where there is a handle which they turned and
it released the
gold and the gold came out of a spout shown in (photo above).

Fintry Protected area Feb 2006
The Okanagan Lake Westside Road right-of-way crosses through the lower section of the protected area.
As directed through the Okanagan-Shuswap LRMP, the lower portion
of the protected area will be retained under the Environment Land Use Act to
allow for potential relocation of the Westside Road, potential development of
logging road access through the northeast corner of
the protected area and possible upgrade of the White Elephant non-status road.
The protected area was established through recommendations of the Okanagan-Shuswap Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) under the Environment Land Use Act with provision that the Okanagan Lake Westside Road right-of-way may be relocated through the area. Allowance is also made for potential development of a forest access road through the northeast corner of the protected area and possible upgrade of the White Elephant non-status road.
