Central Okanagan West (COW)
Local Government Election November
15, 2011
Across the Province of BC, Local Government Elections are held every three
years.
Saturday, November 19th, 2011 is the next Local Government Election day across
the Province.

Regional District of Central Okanagan Election information 2011
RDCO Elections Bylaw No. 1243
Past election results
Where to vote
If you need assistance to vote

On General Voting Day, the following voting locations are open for qualified
voters between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm
Central Okanagan West
Constable Neil Bruce Middle School, 2010 Daimler Road
Killiney Beach Community Hall, 516 Udell Road, Killiney Beach

Central Okanagan West electoral boundary
consists of Brent Road located on the other side of Peachland, Trepanier, Native
Reserves 9 and 10, plus Westside Road.

In 2007 and 2008 Brent Road located on the other side of Peachland, Trepanier,
Native Reserves 9 and 10 voted and cancelled out Killiney Beach voting station
where 2007-2011 Director Jim Edgson resides. In the 2011 COW election lets
hope everyone at Killiney Beach voting station gets out to vote so we can
override the other areas.

Is this maybe a reason why only two candidates ran in the 2007 and 2008
COW election?
Is the distance between North Westside Road BC and the Regional District of
Central Okanagan office at 1450 KLO Road in Kelowna BC where Regional District
of Central Okanagan Board meetings are held, which is a 45 minute drive each way
on a very windy and dangerous Westside Road BC be a reason there were only 2 COW
election candidates to choose from in the 2007 and 2008 Central Okanagan West
election, and will this fact be a deterrent in future local government COW
elections? This fact alone would be the sole reason why one person would
not want to be a candidate. Driving in the dark or early morning is not
the best time to drive Westside Road due to all the deer, and driving in the
winter when the roads are barely plowed is just one more reason. Putting
your life at risk is just not worth it!

Four-year terms eyed for councils
Kelowna Capital News - By Tom Fletcher - June 01,
2010VICTORIA—A task force on local elections has
recommended tighter spending rules for candidates, and a four-year
term of office for those elected to municipal councils and school
boards.
The task force of councillors and B.C. Liberal MLAs decided not to
place limits on campaign contributions by individuals, businesses
and unions. Requiring disclosure of all donations and placing limits
on candidate spending is sufficient to allow voters to make up their
minds, said Community and Rural Development Minister Bill Bennett,
co-chairman of the task force.
Kelowna’s mayor, Sharon Shepherd, said she had no problem with
proposals when asked about them Monday.
The task force also recommended against giving businesses a vote in
local elections. Some coastal communities have seen an industrial
tax revolt led by Catalyst Paper, which unsuccessfully argued in
court that local councils have loaded too much of the local tax
burden on their mills.
Bennett said another task force is looking at the imbalance between
residential and business taxes in some communities, but the
principle of one-person, one-vote was deemed more important than
businesses being taxed without representation.
“You look around the world and you see that there is no corporate or
business vote anywhere in the world, except for downtown London,
England, and nobody lives in downtown London, England,” Bennett
said.
NDP community development critic Scott Fraser said the B.C. Liberals
didn’t want to impose limits on campaign contributions at the
municipal level because they have refused to do so provincially.
Corporate donations have put the B.C. Liberal Party far ahead of the
NDP in campaign money collected in recent years, and NDP leader
Carole James has repeatedly called for a ban on corporate and union
donations to provincial parties. |

Never doubt the ability of a small group of concerned
citizens to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.
