North Westside All Candidates Forum Article from the Vernon Morning Star October 28, 2007

At the all candidates forum we heard that democracy was one of the most important issues for the community and that the NWCA should not act as the communities de facto government.  The North Westside Communities Association has 375 plus members and there are 2099 eligible electors of the North Westside Road area.

When the de facto government issue (as described by Vice President of the North Westside Communities Association Ian Kilpatrick) was asked during the all candidates forum, Jim Edgson said he would have town hall meetings every 3 or 4 months and Dave Robertson said he would have meetings as well. Dave Robertson said he had a comment form on his website for busy people that couldn't attend meetings.

Dave Robertson said Allastair and Richard are starting up another association so that we will have two associations and not just the one NWCA.  It was mentioned by some residents that there use to be much bickering between the NWCA and the now dismantled Ratepayers Association.

Jim Edgson said he would not support vote boxes near the mailboxes because they could be stuffed or tampered with.

Jim Edgson said that he thinks its a good idea to add a yes option to the alternative approval elector response form rather than have a referendum and stressed that its important that people get out and vote.  Dave Robertson says he wants everyone to get out and vote too!

Dave Robertson said he wanted "grass roots democracy".  In Dave Robertson's campaign flyer he says "YOUR AGENDA IS MY AGENDA".

One thing we didn't feel was answered by either candidate adequately at the forum is the question of how to make the democratic process work for everyone including out of town property owners and busy people who can't attend meetings.  Some people can't afford child care for meetings.  Some people are out-of-towners or summer residents and can't attend meetings.  There are many more excuses we're sure.

At least one resident says they would not want to belong to any association but wishes to have their voice heard as an individual plus wants to be able to vote on their own time.  They don't want to have to attend meetings when they are busy, but they still want to be able to vote and have a say.  This resident also feels they would like to be asked their opinion instead of the North Westside Communities Association deciding their opinion for them.

In having two associations there would be more administration, more middle men, more money in way of grant-in-aid, and more bickering, so is having two communities associations the way to go?  Whoever gets voted in needs to work the will of the whole community!!

If one of the problems is that not enough people vote, instead then why don't we make it easier for people to want to vote on more issues???  Maybe we could have one type of vote (non-election vote) for the various issues the community has and call it the "Community Question".

The vote box idea has been revised and this is a newer idea.  How about instead of vote boxes near the mailboxes, we could have a green wooden box (like the current green wooden newsletter box near the mailboxes) to hold a vote letter form just like the alternative approval elector response form that people could pick up out of the green wooden box, vote on the form on their own time at home, then mail by Canada Post to the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) or the proper location instead of placing it in a slot beside or in the same box?  The Canada Post expense to distribute the form to residents could be eliminated for the residents who live in the area full-time, and there would only be an expense to do a mail out to the out-of-town property owners.  We have revised the vote box vote form on this website to reflect this new view and we hope that residents will come back and vote on this new improved initiative about the vote boxes so that everyone can have a voice!!!

We challenge each candidate, residents of the area, or anyone for that matter, to help solve our democracy problem.  Please fill out your question, solution or comment using the form below.

By the way, at the forum, Jim made a nice gesture and thanked us for this poem we sent him.

YOU TELL ON YOURSELF

You tell on yourself by the friends you seek,
By the very manner in which you speak.
By the ways you employ you leisure time,
By the use you make of dollar and dime.

You tell what you are by the things you wear.
By the spirit in which your burden you bear;
By the manner in which you bear defeat,
By so simple a thing as how you eat.

You tell what you are by the way you walk,
By the things of which you delight to talk;
By the book you choose from the well-filled shelf;
In these ways and more, you tell on yourself.
