IN 2009, THE NORTH WESTSIDE ROAD AREA WENT THROUGH A VERY TRYING TIME WONDERING FOR WEEKS IF THEIR HOMES WERE GOING TO BE DESTROYED BY THE TERRACE MOUNTAIN WILDFIRE. THEY WERE EVACUATED TWICE FOR A WEEK OR SO AT A TIME. SOME DIDN'T WAIT TO BE TOLD TO EVACUATE, AND LEFT BEFORE A WARNING WAS EVEN ISSUED THE SECOND TIME AROUND. The Terrace Mountain Wildfire started on or about July 19, 2010, can't remember the exact date now. These are some photos that were taken the following June 6, 2010 and thereafter.
Immediately south of La Casa along Westside Road BC there is a gravel road going up Terrace Mountain from Westside Road BC which you should see this sign from Westside Road BC.
Then you will find this warning sign about the road. Falling Snags & Danger Trees, Landslides & Slope Failures, Debris Torrents, Road Washouts, Road Deactivation, Harvesting Activity posted by the Ministry of Forests British Columbia.
As we got closer to the fire we could sure smell the fire. It wasn't an overwhelming smell, but you couldn't miss the smell. Its a bumpy road with a couple holes from water rushing across and washing out the road a bit. We did see cars up there. You just have to slow down and watch for dips in the road going all the way across the road because you wouldn't want to go very fast over these.
On the way up, there are lots of piles of wood on both sides of the road.
We noticed a few places where these piles have been burnt.
On the way up the hill you will come across these tree and branch piles on the side of the road
A little farther up you will see some spotting of the fire where maybe some ashes flew and started a spot burn.
Here is another photo below of the same spot burn
We turned right about 4 km's up the mountain where the main road comes to a fork onto another main road. Here in this photo you can see the fork and we marked it with an arrow the way we went up Terrace Mountain.
Going down Terrace Mountain you will see the sign that you can see in both these photos, the one above and the one below, which the sign says La Casa is this way and the morel mushroom buyer is 2 km's from the fork in the road. Its about 4 km's from Westside Road to the fork in the road. If you turn the other way and left at the fork on the way up, that other sign on the right in the photo above says Terrace.
If you turn right at the fork in the road on the way up Terrace Mountain from the south side of La Casa, you will see this sign that says Do Not Enter, but we entered because we seen someone on a motorbike who stopped to talk to us for a minute and said all the Morel Mushroom pickers were up that way.
You can see burnt trees before and after the fork in the road. This photo was taken after we turned right at the fork in the road. This road travels north along the lake. You can see Okanagan Lake in the distance.
Not far after you pass this fork in the road, you can see a view through burnt trees of Fintry Delta. Yes that is Fintry Delta down there and as you can see the fire jumped the firebreak road ...and it is burnt for a long ways down this firebreak road too. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a wider fire break as this road was no fire break by the looks of it. Not for a fire like the Terrace Mountain wildfire. People are just lucky is all. Can you see the birds nest in this photo?
We just happen to notice the birds nest that we seen before when we were up top of La Casa ... so we snapped a photo of the nest from this other angle. Click the photo to see the birds nest closer.
A ways up past the fork in the road and on the right hand side is this sign that says Forest Research Plot - Do Not Disturb.
