To make the best tasting juicy hamburgers, try putting your onions in the food
blender until well blended, then add to hamburger. You will be amazed at
the flavour your burger will have.

| Superstore at Anderson Subdivision in Vernon BC has the
best tasting salsa and cheap. It tastes
fresh. You get a huge container the size of the large cottage
cheese container for about $5.00. It comes in a tall clear
container with a name marked on the lid. Can't remember the
name, sorry. |

| Want less caffeine, but can't give up your coffee?
Below is something we were just reading about coffee and caffeine.
It is not a beneficial substance to be sure, but you should know
that it lurks mainly in the cheaper, wild "robusta" varieties of
coffee.
The purer "arabicas" contain almost no caffeine at all. The
cheapo packaged coffees you buy are almost wholly robusta, and
high-roasted too. Buy beans from a good store and make sure they're
100% arabica, then grind your own as you need to. |

| Healthy Popcorn Very tasty, no salt and no butter
healthy alternative!
Use "Engevita Yeast". It comes in a yellow colored
powder form a little darker than the color of butter. You can
buy it in flakes or powder. We use the powder for popcorn.
Just pop the popcorn and sprinkle the Engevita yeast on. If
you like it, "Engevita Yeast" may replace both butter and salt.
You should be able to purchase
Engevita yeast in a can at health food stores, and in some cases
it may also be available in bulk.
Here is some
nutritional information about one brand of Engevita Yeast flakes.
The powder form would be more concentrated. |

Biscuit Topping with Herbs
from Jude’s kitchen.
source Kelowna Capital News
This is a nice savoury topping for a bit of leftover stew instead of
using pastry, to make a pot pie.
3/4 c. flour 175 ml
1/4 c. whole wheat flour 60 ml
2 tsp. baking powder 10 ml
1 tbsp. brown sugar 15 ml
1/2 tsp. salt 2 ml
1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 ml
2 tbsp. fresh parsley 30 ml
2 tbsp. olive oil 30 ml
1/3 c. milk 75 ml
Mix dry ingredients with a whisk and add minced fresh parsley.
Combine olive oil and milk with the dry ingredients in a few quick
strokes.
Squeeze dough or knead it a dozen times, then pat out to a half-inch
thickness and cut into rounds, or just dab onto top of hot stew.
Bake at 425 F for about 15 minutes, or until nicely browned.
Serves 2-4.OkanaganLakeBC.com tried this recipee and it was very
good with stew. We did not make the stew below with this
recipee. |

Crockpot Beef Stew with Wine & Herbs
from Jude’s kitchen.
source Kelowna Capital NewsThis makes a quick and
easy meal for a workday—or a playday when you’ll be away all day,
but want to come home to a meal that makes the whole house smell
yummy. Double the recipe if you want to make a second meal from it,
or leave it as is to make a second meal for two.
1 lb. stew beef 454 g
2 tbsp. flour 30 ml
salt and pepper, to taste
4 carrots 4
2 celery stalks 2
1 onion 1
1 garlic clove 1
1 c. beef broth 250 ml
1/4 c. red wine 60 ml
2 tsp. thyme 10 ml
1 tsp. tarragon 5 ml
1 tbsp. fresh parsley 15 ml
Dredge cubes of beef in a mixture of flour, salt and pepper and
brown quickly in a little hot oil, then put into crockpot or slow
cooker. Deglaze pan juices with beef broth.
Chop vegetables into chunks and mince garlic. Add to beef.
Add beef broth, wine and herbs.
Cover and simmer on low for eight hours or so.
Garnish with fresh chopped parsley.
Serves 4. |

This is what OkanaganLakeBC.com's bread looks like
looking thru the viewing glass in the top of the bread
maker. |

This is the loaf of bread OkanaganLakeBC.com make in the
bread maker. |
| |
|
Ingredients and
instructions for larger loaf
of OkanaganLakeBC.com's loaf of bread in the photo
above. This bread is not as tasty as some
breads when eaten by itself, but it rises really nice!!
You may want to try adjusting this recipe to suit your
taste, maybe you will get an idea of how to get your
bread to rise better, and or have a tastier recipe than OkanaganLakeBC.com?Put the ingredients below in the
bread maker in this order while your house is warm:
1 1/8 cup or little less of water first, then
1/2 square of margarine
1 Tbsp white sugar or honey
1 dash of salt (salt kills yeast, so don't put too much
in)
1 tsp molasses (molasses helps bread rise and so does
sugar)
then swish the pan around to mix sugar and salt
2 1/4 cup white flour (Robin Hood all purpose flour
rises better but I use the no name brand of all purpose
flour from Superstore so be careful of over rising if
you use Robin Hood's white flour, maybe cut down on the
yeast a bit or omit the molasses)
3/4 cup brown flour (I am using Robin Hood all purpose
brown flour for this recipe)
1 Tbsp lemon juice will help preserve your bread and
honey will too.
1 level tsp Fleishman's bread maker yeast (in the
little jar for approx. $5.00) on top of all the the
flour last. Don't over do the yeast or your bread
will be sticking to the viewing glass.
I heard gluten is bad for you so I don't use it.
I'd like to start using seeds in my bread and getting it
to rise nice.
I bake my bread on the dark setting and the longest
setting about 4 hours in all. If you don't like the
taste of brown flour then try 1/4 cup of ground flax to
replace the brown flour and use 2 3/4 cup white flour
instead of 2 1/4 cup. |
