Some information about the Westside Road area
Westside Road BC is located in the Central Okanagan of BC and has some of most breath taking scenery in the BC interior according to many. Westside Road runs north to south from Vernon BC to Kelowna BC on the Westside of Okanagan Lake.
There are a wide range of vacation rental suites located around Okanagan Lake. If you are looking for a more rural area of the Okanagan, then Westside Road is for you. Many Okanagan vacation rentals are already booked by the time summer comes around, so your best bet is to start looking in the winter or spring if you want the best selection.
Okanagan Lake is a very large lake and home to the famous Ogopogo but don't let Ogopogo scare you, as most people don't even get to see him. Two girls have been out gathering Ogopogo poop from the depths of Okanagan Lake though and are selling it, so he must be around somewhere.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan bylaw permits daily and weekly rentals.
You will not find a nicer lake than Okanagan Lake. Not too crowded with boats like Shuswap Lake is, and the water is beautiful, the scenery spectacular, camping the best, can shop for groceries at Little Kingdom, and buy liquor at La Casa's cold beer and wine store and some groceries there as well. You can eat out at a restaurant, have a campfire and roast marsh mellows, go hiking, drink beer, but best of all, you can spend some time with your family having fun.
If you wish to go camping, there are campsites at Newport Beach which has the Neehoot grocery store next to it and is capable of handling RV's or tents. You can take your dog camping at the Evely forestry campsite (no reservations required, first come, first serve) but watch out for poison ivy. There are 34 un-serviced RV and tenting sites at Evely forest campsite with some campsites that are right on Okanagan Lake. There is also camping down at Fintry Provincial Park (map) with 100 campsites that you can reserve and which some campsites are right on Okanagan Lake. Did you know there is an old large barge sunk at Fintry Provincial Park that divers are known to dive for. Apparently this barge was the onl Fintry Marina break, and its located at the foot of campsite 63. Fintry public beach has the nicest sand with picnic tables to sit at, and with bathrooms and heated showers inside unheated buildings as well. Then there is also camping at Bear Creek Provincial Park (map) where there is an area nearby that you can ride your dirt bike which they call Bear Creek motorized recreation area, or you can view the waterfalls. During the summer season the park has a concession located at the Gatehouse and managed by the Park Facility Operator.
There are lots of things to do around Okanagan Lake. You can rent a cabin or vacation rental house on Okanagan Lake and take a lakeside vacation for a week or two, and go golfing at Spallumcheen golf course which offers a 9 hole, par 35 course (2624 yards), and an 18 hole championship layout of 6423 yards. There are lots of hiking trails, or rent a boat at Lake Okanagan Marina & Rentals Inc. and go fresh water fishing, parasailing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, etc.. You can visit O'Keefe Historic Ranch which has a museum and the Cattlemen's Club Restaurant.

at Parker Cove nearer to the north end of Westside Road but on the south side of
the OKIB native reserve. There are many more

If your looking for noise and excitement you can attend the races at Sun Valley Speedway (NASCAR races, Super Trucks, and other events) just up the road from O'Keefe Historic Ranch and the Spallumcheen golf course. There are campgrounds at Sun Valley Speedway as well.
If your a motorcycle enthusiast then Westside Road is the road for you. There are lots of corners, and sharp ones too! Watch for rocks and animals on the road and better watch out for our local Director who is targeting speeding motorcyclists in the area too!
If you are looking for a scenic drive, you may enjoy Westside Road. There are pullouts along Westside Road with some spectacular views. there is one good view at Valley of the Sun about 5 km's north of La Casa Lakeside Cottage Resort.
You can always hike the trail at Bear Creek.
You will see lots of deer along the sides of the road, so be careful you don't run into one!
There are coyotes we have seen near Lake Okanagan Resort.
The bears are out in the summer, and if you don't want to see one and your camping, then secure your garbage in a bear proof container and keep your food locked in your vehicle and preferably some place you are not sleeping.
WARNING you will see marmots at La Casa Lakeside Cottage Resort but don't get close as they may attack and they will bite.

You may see ospreys if you watch for them. Ospreys are a large bird with some white on their head and can be mistaken for an eagle. There is one large osprey nest south of Valley of the Sun above Fintry Delta and north of Fintry Provincial Park turn off, in the area where there was a fire years ago. The ospreys have a nest on the hydro pole and there are some ospreys in the nest this year 2008, so have a look for them.
Don't forget your camera's zoom lens if you plan on taking photos of these ospreys, as these photos we took are not the best because they were taken with a 6x optical zoom camera.
There were some white headed bald eagles down at
Fintry Provincial Park (map)
near the old packing house building located at the public beach. The
eagles had a nest high at the top of the big old tree right beside the packing
house, but I guess when they started
restoring
the old packing house with a new roof, the eagles left. Hopefully they
will return. This is the last lakeside packing house on Okanagan Lake, a
significant part of Fintry’s history and is really
worth saving.

Fintry have been helping to restore some of the heritage buildings at
Fintry Provincial Park (map)
like the octagonal barn and the manor house.
There are many parks along Westside Road including, Fintry Provincial Park (map), Killiney Beach Regional Park, Traders Cove Regional Park, Bear Creek Provincial Park (map). Here is an interactive map of the local Regional parks we found on the Regional Districts website.
If you like waterfalls, you can hike up to the waterfalls of Shorts Creek from Fintry Provincial Park (map) plus you can visit the waterfalls at Bear Creek Park as well.
There are only two gas stations along Westside Road
(down to one gas station now) and both are
across the road from each other at the North end (Vernon BC end) on the
OKIB reserve, so make sure
you fill up if you will not be travelling past these two gas stations. The
gas stations are named
Little Kingdom
and
Arrowhead gas and grocery also known as Sun Valley Petroleum
There are four places to buy groceries. Neehoot grocery at Newport Beach, Arrowhead gas and grocery, La Casa Cantina, and Little Kingdom is the largest.
There are two hardware stores in the North Westside Road area. One is Westside Pro Hardware and the other is Little Kingdom True-Value Hardware which both are on the OKIB reserve at the north end of Westside Road.
If you need propane, La Casa does not sell propane any more but Little Kingdom does.
British Columbia is the best place on earth, but that's because
